How to use Yahoo and MSN Smilies in Pidgin
For the last 2 years I have been using Gaim for all my Instant Messaging needs (especially Yahoo Messenger). Recently, along with version 2.0, Gaim is no longer Gaim, it is Pidgin. I was happy to see it out of the beta, but something stopped me from using it from the first day. I was so used to the Yahoo Smilies, I just didn’t feel comfortable with the default Pidgin smilies.
Now, that’s not a problem anymore: I have found a theme pack with all the smilies for both Yahoo and MSN. I have found it here, but you can also download it from my website, also (just wanted to be sure I can find it anytime I switch Operating Systems on my computers).
Why would you use Pidgin instead of Yahoo Messenger? How about no advertising, nu stupid buzz (ok, that was then, now you can remove the buzz), the same IM client on Linux and Windows? No IMVs, no Audibles… The same client for every protocol (MSN, GTalk). Yes, you might lose some advantages like Photosharing and file sending, but trust me, you will be a lot happier having them in your email account, to be able to find them from any computer.
Well, you have to test it to understand what the heck I am talking about :)

n-ai varianta de plug-in pentru versiunea de W?
You can use the file I have provided: you drag it in the Smiley Themes list tab in Preferences (Ctrl-P). I am using it in windows right now and it’s working great.
In Ubuntu 7.04 it doens’t seem to work. I tried to drag and drop the new smilies theme but nothing happens. I’m using Pidgins 2.0.2.
Any ideas?

@George: did you try to drag and drop the archive? I dragged the smilies, at first, at to no succes.
We use Pidgin as one of our options for ourproduct, “Banner Chats”. It works very well for us!

If I add my custom emoticons, will my contacts be able to see them just like in Windows Live Messenger?

@Pensador: your contacts will see whatever smilies they use. You cannot control how their programs react. But, if they have MSN, they will see you smilies :)

Hi, thanks for your post. I still don’t know how to add any icon / smiley received from a msn user in a chat window.
Can you help me with that? I often see cool icons and animations, but I don’t know where to save that image so it appears in my smileys set.

Thanks for the post. There seems to a bug though. After using some of the smilies, I can’t see the next message I send. It is only displayed after another message is send (the two are displayed together). Try for example :-h (before using any other simlies).
@CHUQUI: try to rename the file 59794-Original.tar.tar to 59794-Original.tar.gz and then drag it to Smiley Themes list from Preferences. Then select Original theme.

I’m using Pidgin too, but I’m used to Yahoo Smileys :D And yes it’s useful cuz I have to log on MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Gmail and others. I love it. By the way, I’m Romanian.
